Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes how Zurnl (“Zurnl”, “we”, “us”) handles information when you use our website and reader at zurnl.com to read today's e-newspaper and online magazines. We aim to be clear, honest, and minimal about data — and to give you meaningful choices.
The short version
- Versions of Zurnl launched before sign-in are account-free: there is currently no user account or sign-up.
- We don't sell your personal information, and we don't use advertising networks that profile you across the web.
- We collect limited technical data (such as the publication and date you load) so the reader can work and so we can fix bugs.
- You can contact us anytime at support@zurnl.com with privacy questions.
What we collect
We collect only what is needed to provide the reading service and keep it running.
Information you provide directly
- Contact form — your name, email address, subject, and message when you write to us through the Contact page.
Information collected automatically
- Server logs — basic request data such as approximate location (country-level), anonymised IP, requested URL path, timestamp, and request status. This is the standard information any web server logs.
- Technical data — browser type, device type, screen size, and referral URL where available, used for diagnostics.
- Usage data — the type of publication (e-papers or magazines), publication name and date you load in the reader. We use this to render editions, prioritise caching, and identify which publications are popular.
We take care not to collect more than is necessary. In particular, we do not currently run third-party analytics that fingerprints individual visitors across the web.
How we use information
We use the information we hold to:
- Operate the reader — fetching the publication and date you request and streaming pages back to your browser.
- Cache editions at the edge so repeat reads are fast and bandwidth is reduced.
- Respond to messages you send via the contact form and address feedback or reported problems.
- Maintain the security, integrity, and availability of the site (for example, detecting abuse or failed request patterns).
- Improve Zurnl — for example, understanding which publications are most read so we keep their editions warm in the cache.
- Comply with our legal obligations.
Reading content and publications
Zurnl is a reader: it loads publication pages and shows them to you. We do not claim ownership over the publications or their content. All rights in the newspapers, magazines, and any text or images inside them remain with their respective publishers and rights holders. When you load a publication, your request is routed through Zurnl's edge function to the relevant edition source for that publication.
If you are a publisher or rights holder and you believe a publication should not be available through Zurnl, please contact us at support@zurnl.com and we will work with you to remove it promptly.
Cookies and similar technologies
Zurnl is designed to need very few cookies:
- Essential — any technical cookies strictly necessary to make the reader work would be classified as essential. These cannot be turned off because they keep the service functioning.
- Where we use local storage or browser storage, it is for performance reasons (for example caching page objects in the browser to avoid re-downloading large images). This storage is local to your device and is cleared along with your normal browsing data.
If we ever introduce optional cookies (such as for analytics), we will update this policy first and, where required, ask for your consent before they are set.
Third parties and service providers
Zurnl uses third-party services to operate. These providers may process limited data on our behalf or as part of providing the infrastructure:
- Cloudflare — our edge network and Pages Functions. Cloudflare may process request routing, edge caching, and security metadata as part of delivering the site to your browser.
- Content delivery — the JavaScript library used for the reader (PhotoSwipe) is loaded from the jsDelivr CDN, which may receive an anonymised request to serve the file.
- Email — if you contact us, we may use a service provider to receive and respond to messages.
We never sell your personal information to third parties.
Data retention
We keep information only as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy:
- Contact form messages are retained for as long as necessary to resolve your request and to keep reasonable support records, then deleted.
- Server log information is retained for a limited period for security and diagnostics, then deleted or aggregated so it no longer identifies individuals.
- Edge-cached editions are retained for up to the period set by the relevant cache configuration (typically 24 hours for image pages and 30 minutes for date listings) and may be removed earlier.
Your choices and rights
- Use Zurnl without an account. You don't have to sign in to read. No account, no profile.
- Control storage. You can clear local storage, cache, and cookies in your browser at any time. Zurnl will continue to work.
- Request information or deletion. If you've contacted us and want your message deleted, or if you have any privacy request, email support@zurnl.com and we'll respond within a reasonable time, in line with applicable law.
- Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR (EU/UK), the CCPA (California), or other local privacy laws. Nothing here limits any rights you have under those laws.
Children's privacy
Zurnl is a general-interest news reader and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
International transfers
Zurnl is delivered through Cloudflare's global edge network, which means your request may be served from a data centre in a country other than your own. We rely on appropriate safeguards, such as Cloudflare's compliance with recognised transfer mechanisms (including the EU–US Data Privacy Framework where applicable), and on data minimisation.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Zurnl evolves. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, add a notice on the homepage. We encourage you to revisit this page periodically.
